Master of Business Administration at USM

I wanted to get an MBA originally
because I was kind of a mid-level, lower level, entry level kind of person in the nonprofit sector. Which in Maine is very competitive. and so I wanted that leg up
over all of the competition and also wanted that authentic management
foundation that I could apply to any business decision. So I wanted to, not
only, be able to lead a nonprofit organization, but lead it with that same business mindset as an MBA would in the for-profit sector. – The biggest reason I’ll tell someone go
to USM is because USM makes you get out there. Since I’ve been at USM every semester I’ve done a consulting project with a company in the Southern Maine
area. LLBean, Cyanbro, Dead River. It’s an amazing experience you network
like crazy Especially if you want to work in Maine, this is the program for you. – I think people under value and underestimate what a fresh perspective can do, because and students always bring that. Because they’re looking, they’re coming at it with learning as their first goal and they’re coming into this project
with no preconceived notions as to what’s going on or how things should be
done and so these students just provide a lot of fresh ideas which can help
kick-start new progress and spinning off companies or products. – Right now I am in the process of a practicum semester where I’ve been
placed in a consulting group with three other amazing young woman and between the four of us I think we have one perfect MBA brain. And we were partnered with Ocean Solutions down at the ocean terminal
right on Commercial Street in Portland which is where all the action happens if
you live in this area. So that was a delight just being placed in the thick of it. And then we’ve also been given a real world, on the cusp of excellence problem which is developing further revenue uses for lobster. – Our idea is to then use the rest of the
lobster waste, the byproduct, to develop other products that can be marketable so for example in this case we’re trying
to extract Chitosan, which is a compound that can be used in cosmetics, it has
applications in the medical industry, food and beverage its used in a number of different sectors. It’s a very useful product. Chitosan comes from the
lobster shells. – USM is really embracing the world of best practices I really have appreciated working with USM as they’ve embraced going to foreign countries to find best practices and
getting that exchange to really be a part of the education. – So in Iceland they’ve really focused on
ways to increase the amount of cod they use. Previously they only use the fillets so
they looked at how they could use the bones, and the head, and other parts of the fish. So we’re trying to do that same thing
here and try to use more of each lobster that’s caught in Maine. – Multiple professors have offered to take students across the country and across the globe on graduate level research. So I’ve got to go to Vietnam, I went to
the London olympics, I went to france. And if we win this semester’s capstone we go in Iceland too. I think one of the biggest reasons that people choose to get the MBA is job prospects. and even when I’m not looking now that I’m getting my MBA and folks
know that I’m getting my MBA my connections in the community are often
reaching out to me asking what I’m doing next. with the interest of potential
employment in the future. And that’s very exciting
