Creative industries
Over the past decade more emphasis has been put on the creative industries in the Faroe Islands. And succesfully so.

Fashion design
In the recent years the Faroe Islands have fostered a string of fashion designers. At the moment the fashion team of Guðrun & Guðrun are head and shoulders above the rest, winning international interest. With their modern interpretations of the traditional knitwear of the Faroe Islands, they have clad international celebrities as fashion icon Helena Christensen.

Several other fashion designers are on the brink of a breakthrough. London based Elisa Heinesen as well as Barbara í Gongini in Denmark are winning greater acclamation by the day.

Architecture
The single most visual item of the Faroese architecture is the grass roof. Invented out of neccesity, its durability, noise reduction and insulation is directly in line with modern ecological thinking. Former President of the United States of America Bill Clinton singled out on his visit to the Faroe Islands the grass roof as an element for export.

The traditional elements in Faroese architecture are most visible in the older churches. Examples can be seen at www.folkakirkjan.fo

Contemporary Faroese architects continue to shape both the urban and rural parts of the Faroe Islands, with modern architecture that brings together the past with the future.

Film and media
The Faroe Islands have mainly through the years only been used as wings in films made by foreign directors. There are however some filmmakers, that have defied the odds and made films about the life and stories in the Faroe Islands. The best known is Katrin Ottarsdóttir who lives and works in Denmark.

But in the last 2-5 years a more serious effort has been put into establishing a Faroese film production. Still in its infancy, the Klippfisk project shows promise and real hope in establishing a proper film production based in the Faroe Islands. For further information see www.klippfisk.fo

Recently there has been an increase in foreign interest to film in the Faroe Islands both for TV productions to show life in the Faroes Islands but also as wings in international TV commercials.
