Former Vice President of United States and Nobel Prize Winner Al Gore will be one of the keynote speakers at the Trans Atlantic Climate Conference held in the Faroe Islands 7 & 8 April 2008.

This high profile conference is a new initiative focusing on climate changes in the Atlantic Ocean, and challenges related to an improved ocean climate. The conference will showcase opportunities for a “Trans Atlantic Climate Institute” (TACIT) based in the Faroe Islands, collaborating with
universities, R&D institutions, and industry in Europe and North America.

In addition to hosting international keynote speakers, the conference will conduct workshops with topics such as:

 

• Research of Atlantic Ocean climate change.
• Innovative Marine Technology for CO2 reduction.
• Investment prospects in sustainable technologies.
• TACIT as a knowledge hub.

The conference is a result of the recognised need of coordination between Europe and North America regarding the marine environment – both with regard to marine climate research and innovation of sustainable technological solutions.

Research institutions and industry need easier access to each other. Industry requires sustainable technologies that reduce both energy consumption and the negative impact on the marine environment. Research institutions need capital and feedback from industry to undertake the necessary research.

The conference will come up with a “Road Map” for how to establish TACIT – a Trans Atlantic Climate Institute for the coordination and facilitation of applied research and innovative projects regarding marine science and technology. Another outcome of the conference will be a compendium describing the challenges for an improved climate in the Atlantic Ocean (based on papers from the workshops).
