Research facilities have been built up at the University of the Faroe Islands and other research institutions. This has enabled co-operation with scholars in other countries and participation in joint research projects. Areas of research include the following:
• The University of the Faroe Islands
The Faculty of Faroese Language : Research in Faroese language, literature and oral literature.
The Faculty of History and Social Sciences : Research in history, cultural history and social sciences, with particular emphasis on Faroese history, Faroese cultural history and the Faroese society.
The Faculty of Science and Technology : The fields of research include numerical modelling of ocean tides, modelling of ocean waves, seismic interpretation and signal processing, mechanical properties of basalt, radioecology, fish fauna and ecology on the Faroe Bank and modern telecommunication.
• The Museum of Natural History Botany : The scope of activities comprises research in plant communities and diversity of plantspecies in relation to climatic parameters, influence at the vegetation according to changes in thecommunity, and the relationship between vegetation and grazing.
Zoology : Research is mainly directed towards marine life. The main topics over the last 30 years have been marine mammals and seabed habitats by sampling material from landed whales and satellite tagging whales and grey seals. Various terrestrial studies are going on as administration of ringed birds data, advice regarding vermin/pest control, and following environmental changes in connection with developments in the community. • Jarðfeingi, the Faroese Earth and Energy Directorate
Jarðfeingi is responsible for research in the geological resources of the Faroe Islands in broad terms. This includes research in geological, geophysical and geographical issues, onshore and offshore, as well as issues related to energy resources, for instance petroleum exploration and alternative energy resources. Research activities include marine geology, palaeoclimatology, glacial geology and technical geology. Jarðfeingi cooperates with the Museum of Natural History on geological exhibitions and has otherwise a substantial national and international network of scientific cooperation. • The Faroe National Library The National Library has three main functions: To collect all Faroese literature and as much written documentation from all available sources concerning the Faroe Islands, to be the National Central library for all the Faroe Islands, and to be a library for scholars. |
