Leisure activities
The widest range of activities and facilities are located around Tórshavn, but larger towns and villages have many good offers for the visitor

All major sports are popular, and most of the larger towns/villages have good facilities.

Racing the traditional wooden Faroese boat, a descendant of the Viking longboat at the summer festivals is regarded as the national sport, but football is very popular and played in nearly every village.

Most of the sports clubs are members of the Faroe Islands National Sports
Association. There is also an association for the disabled, who participates in the Para Olympic Games.
Many people spend their spare time outdoors. The many birds attract ornithologists and the Faroes are an angler’s paradise.

The only true “game” in the Faroe Islands is the artic hare, and this
rough shooting is a popular but arduous winter sport from November through December.

Rock-climbing should definitely be refrained from, but hill walking is a popular choice. There is an ancient system of cairn-marked tracks connecting the villages. It is advisable to choose the routes carefully. Information about arranged hiking tours with a local guide can be obtained from the Information Office.

The Scouts movement has been active in the Faroe Islands for many years, and there are several clubs for boys and girls.
During long dark winters, evening classes offer instructions in most handicrafts. Music is also taught at the evening classes, both vocal and instrumental.

Approximately 30 choirs exist around the islands. Brass bands and other orchestras/bands are plentiful.

Drama, dancing and amateur theatre groups are present in many villages. The outstanding cultural heritage is the Faroese chain dance, always popular during Christmas, on Twelvth Night, Shrove Monday and Easter Monday and of course at summer festivals and St. Olavs Day.

Tórshavn and most of the larger towns offer a number of museums, art-galleries, theatres, culture-houses, cinemas and libraries with a varied, national and international program. And to spend the evenings, there is a growing number of restaurants, bars and night clubs/discos.
