To a large extent, the Faroese Regulations regarding Fire Prevention and Fire Safety correspond with Regulations in other Nordic Countries.
All construction activities must obtain building permit in accordance with Official Regulations. The Municipal Authorities grant licences after evaluating a specific case and imposes demands to ensure that Regulations are met. Prior to construction of buildings designed for business of inflammable and explosive nature local authorities must, on behalf of the builders, apply for a licence from the Fire Regulating Authorities (Brunaumsjón Landsins). This also applies to major reconstruction, including extension work and alterations, which significantly alter working conditions. Various construction types will be issued with a licence if they comply with the specific Fire Regulatory Classifications. If the type of building is not previously classified, the closest alternative classification will apply. If there is no closely related classification the necessary building permission will be issued following directions from the Fire Regulation Authorities. In addition to the above, the Fire Regulation Authorities, by law, also play an active role with respect to inspection of existing constructions, storage facilities and other activities of potentially hazardous nature.
Local municipalities are under obligation to maintain adequate fire fighting capacity in accordance with the basic danger potential in the area. Generally populous buildings, companies and manufacturers or storage facilities of hazardous materials may be required to ensure installation of fire fighting facilities on the premises.
